MACIR’s Digital Equity & Workforce Impact from Local to Nationwide

The Massachusetts Association for Computer and Internet Resources has actively participated in numerous initiatives aimed at bridging the digital divide and advancing workforce development on local, state, and federal levels. Collaborating with like-minded organizations, MACIR has forged impactful partnerships with key entities, most notably the Statewide Digital Equity Coalition, JEDI Consortium, and Revere Works who share a common vision of promoting digital inclusion and workforce empowerment. These partnerships underscore MACIR’s commitment to fostering collective efforts in addressing the challenges of technology access and promoting equitable opportunities for skill development across various levels of government and community engagement.

Local Impact:

At the local level, MACIR has made a significant impact through its collaboration with “Revere Works.” This coalition, comprised of Revere City departments, workforce training agencies, and educational providers, is dedicated to serving the residents of Revere by strategically coordinating workforce development initiatives. Through meticulous planning, targeted programming, and active engagement with employers and the community, “Revere Works” has become a vital force in enhancing employment opportunities and fostering skill development among the local population. MACIR’s involvement in this grassroots initiative underscores its commitment to making a tangible and positive difference in the Revere community, addressing the specific needs and challenges faced by residents on the local front.

Regional Impact:

On a regional scale, MACIR’s impact is notably evident through its partnership with the JEDI Consortium, an initiative funded by the Massachusetts Broadband Institute (MBI) to amplify digital equity initiatives within the workforce board. The Digital Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (JEDI) Consortium, facilitated by MACIR, extends its services to clients at the MassHire Metro North Career Centers, MassHire North Shore Career Centers, and several communities, including Revere, Chelsea, Everett, Malden, Somerville, Cambridge, Lynn, Salem, and Gloucester. This comprehensive initiative encompasses recruiting, hiring, training, and supporting a cohort of 32 digital navigators, providing digital literacy classes, distributing 1,500 refurbished Microsoft laptops, 300 hotspots, peripherals, internet access, and IT support. The JEDI Consortium also collaborates with community-based organizations and priority communities, conducting extensive outreach to raise awareness about digital equity. Through these efforts, MACIR’s regional impact is instrumental in creating a more digitally inclusive and empowered workforce across diverse communities.

Statewide Impact:

At the statewide level, MACIR has played a pivotal role in shaping digital equity through its collaboration with the Massachusetts Broadband Institute (MBI) and the Statewide Digital Equity Coalition. Teaming up to drive initiatives that span the entire state, MACIR and the Coalition share a dedication to eliminating the digital divide. Together, they advocate for inclusive access to technology, champion digital literacy programs, and work towards providing equitable opportunities for all residents of Massachusetts. This coalition, comprising diverse stakeholders, collaborates closely with ACP service providers to address systemic disparities, ensuring the fair distribution of resources. By fostering strategic partnerships, leading advocacy efforts, and actively engaging with communities, MACIR and the Digital Equity Coalition are at the forefront of efforts to create a more digitally inclusive Massachusetts. Discover Our Collaborative Network: Meet the Organizations Driving Digital Equity and Workforce Development Initiatives with MACIR

Massachusetts Broadband Institute (MBI). MBI’s mission is to make affordable high-speed Internet available to all homes, businesses, schools, libraries, medical facilities, government offices, and other public places across the Commonwealth. MBI works closely with the Administration, the state legislature, municipalities, broadband service providers, and other key stakeholders to bridge the digital divide in Massachusetts. The Commonwealth created the MBI as a division of the MassTech Collaborative when signing the Broadband Act into law in August 2008. 

MassHire Metro North Workforce: A local organization committed to facilitating workforce development and strengthening the economic landscape. MassHire Metro North Workforce’s mission revolves around connecting job seekers with employment opportunities, supporting skill development, and fostering partnerships with employers to meet the demands of a dynamic labor market. Through a range of programs and services, they play a pivotal role in building a skilled and resilient workforce, enhancing regional competitiveness, and contributing to the overall economic prosperity of the Metro North area.

National Digital Inclusion Alliances (NDIA). MDIA’s mission is to advance digital equity by supporting community programs and equipping policymakers to act. NDIA occupies a unique role in connecting organizations from across the country engaged with technology and broadband development issues. NDIA is committed to faithfully reflecting the perspectives and interests of local digital inclusion practitioners and advocates.

The Neighborhood Developers (TND): TND and Connect are dedicated organizations committed to bridging the digital divide and championing workforce and economic justice. Their mission is centered on ensuring equitable access to technology, education, and economic opportunities for all communities. TND focuses on leveraging technology as a catalyst for positive change, offering training programs, and fostering digital literacy to empower individuals in navigating the modern digital landscape. Simultaneously, Connect is deeply engaged in workforce and economic justice initiatives, striving to dismantle barriers that hinder equal access to employment and economic resources. Through collaborative efforts, TND and Connect aim to narrow disparities, create inclusive pathways to technology careers, and contribute to the realization of a more equitable and just society. Revere Community School (RCS): RCS is a beacon of community engagement and learning, driven by its mission to enhance the lives of residents through accessible education and enrichment programs. MGH Revere HealthCare Center Revere CARES Coalition collaborate with a shared mission to enhance community health and well-being through education, prevention, and advocacy. The Revere CARES Coalition, an integral part of this initiative, focuses on substance abuse prevention and overall community wellness. Their mission encompasses promoting healthy lifestyles, preventing substance abuse, and addressing the underlying factors that contribute to health disparities. Through educational programs, outreach efforts, and community partnerships, the coalition strives to empower residents with the knowledge and resources necessary to make informed health choices. By fostering collaboration between healthcare professionals, community organizations, and local residents, the MGH Revere HealthCare Center and the Revere CARES Coalition work synergistically to create a healthier and more resilient community in Revere, addressing both immediate healthcare needs and the broader social determinants of health.

Women Encouraging Empowerment (WEE): WEE is a local non profit organization driven by a profound mission to uplift and empower women through holistic support and advocacy. Tech Goes Home (TGH). TGH empowers communities to access and use digital tools to overcome barriers and advance lives. TGH brings computers, internet, and training to those without so students can do homework, adults can find jobs and manage finances, seniors can connect with loved ones, and all can lead healthier lives. TGH works in partnership with schools, healthcare providers, and community organizations, Tech Goes Home provides curated support – including access to digital devices, network connectivity, and robust training in how to utilize digital resources – to help individuals and families pursue economic mobility, support academic achievement, access critical resources, and engage with their community and loved ones. 

Computer Core: Since 1999, Computer CORE’s mission has been to prepare underserved adults to realize career aspirations with foundational digital and professional skills. CORE graduates are proficient in Microsoft Office 365, Google Workspace, and keyboarding skills. They learn how to build their resume, write effective cover letters, and have completed professional development classes.

International Institute of New England (IINE): a valued partner within the CONNECT network, brings extensive expertise in hospitality job training and placement, specifically tailored to refugee and immigrant communities. Demonstrating a dedicated commitment, IINE collaborates with CONNECT to strengthen job training and placement capacities in the Metro North region. Together, they work synergistically to empower individuals from diverse backgrounds, fostering inclusive employment opportunities and contributing to the broader economic development of the community
